Jonathan Montes Bio

In 2002, Jonathan Montes took over a struggling Calverton School lacrosse program that had managed just 1 win in its first 2 years of existence. Within 3 years of Montes’ arrival, the Cougars went from worst to 1st in the Maryland Independent Lacrosse (MILL) to consistently competing for the Maryland Independent Lacrosse League Championship.

In Montes’ second year, the Cougars took a dramatic step forward improving from (2-11) in 2002 to (13-5) in 2003 beating the eventual MILL Champions in the regular season 13-7. For his team’s accomplishment and record turn around, Montes was named the 2003 Washington Post Southern MD All Extra Lacrosse Coach of the Year. The Cougars continued their winning ways taking the Regular Season Championships in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010,2011 and from 2004 on they went to 6 MILL Tournament Championships capturing the title in 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010 & 2011.

The 2005 season proved to be one of the greatest in the history of The Calverton School athletic program as Montes guided the Cougars to a school-record 16 wins capping off an undefeated season with a victory over the 2004 MILL champ The Heights School. Following the 2005 campaign, Montes was named The Washington Post All Metropolitan Lacrosse Coach of Year.

After the 2002 season, Montes posted 9 consecutive 10 win seasons with a total win loss record of 112-51 while at The Calverton School. He was named 2007 US Lacrosse Man of Year for his significant efforts to promote, develop and aid lacrosse at the secondary school level while improving the lacrosse opportunities for student-athletes in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area. In 2011 Montes was named The Calvert Recorder Calvert County Boy’s Lacrosse Coach of the Year. In March of 2012 Montes stepped down from coaching at The Calverton School due to an impending move to Florida. He left behind a team that consisted of 14 College Commitments, 7 of whom were headed to compete at the Division I level and earned a reputation for producing Division I talent along the way.  (Inside Lacrosse Article SMS Elite Vs. Montes Co-Founded Southern Maryland Select Lacrosse (SMS) in 2002 with the primary goal of focusing on Elite High School level recruiting.   SMS fielded teams with players from more than 45 different high schools, 10 different counties in MD and 8 states.

Under Montes' guidance, SMS Elite became one of the oldest and most well-known select recruiting teams in the nation. Along the way, Montes has assisted more than 155 student-athletes achieve their dream of getting recruited to play college lacrosse at schools such as Johns Hopkins, Princeton, Yale, Penn State, Maryland, Ohio State, Towson, Salisbury etc. Click here: http://smslacrosse.com/page/sms-alumni.html 

In June of 2012, Montes founded Gainesville RedHawks Lacrosse and Florida Generals Lacrosse.  The Gainesville RedHawks were set up to begin to teach boys at the K-6th grade levels the game of lacrosse.  The Florida Generals were founded as a spin-off of the ultra-successful elite recruiting program Montes started back in Maryland - SMS Lacrosse.  The Generals primary mission is to help underexposed talent in the state of Florida been seen and recruited to play college lacrosse; however, starting in the summer of 2013 the Florida Generals began fielding teams (fall and summer) to compete at the U9, U11, U13 as well as the HS level.  

He was named Associate Head Lacrosse Coach at Oak Hall School and helped OHS forge a record of 31-7 in two years (2013-2014). For his efforts, he was named the 2013 North Florida US Lacrosse Assistant Coach of the Year.  In June of 2014 he was named Head Lacrosse Coach at Oak Hall School. In his 1st year as head coach, the Eagles won the 2015 District 2 Championship with a starting lineup that was composed of 70% Freshmen and Sophomores - and only 1 senior on the roster.  In 2016 and 2018, Montes was named the Gainesville Sun Boys Lacrosse Coach of the Year.

Montes played college ball at The Ohio State University and is a former high school All American lacrosse player going 50-1 as a varsity lacrosse player with 2 undefeated seasons. While Montes has spent the majority of this career coaching at a small, academic private school (80 boys in the whole school 9th-12th grade) he also coached lacrosse for 2 years at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology – the #1 rated public high school in the nation (academically).  He and his wife Heather have a son, Pierce (12) and a daughter, Isla (10) and a daughter, Ivana (5) - All play lacrosse.
